Bookskoetter Review:
I have read all but one of the 2011-2012 Gateway nominees, and I have to say that this book is unlike the other nominees on the list.  First of all, it's the only book that takes place in another country.  Second, it's the only one that deals with political conflicts. I found it to be an interesting look into the life of a soldier in Iraq.  The book gives readers a peak into Iraqui culture as well, but not a very extensive peak - I definitely would have liked more. I found Matt, the protagonist, to be very likable and easy to relate to.  The story deals with some heavy stuff, but doesn't do so in a sappy, overly emotional way (which was kind of refreshing, to be honest).  I would recommend this book to any teen who likes realistic fiction, and is interested in war stories, current events, or other cultures.
